A special legislative session of the General Assembly is underway today, after being called by Gov. Andy Beshear (D) to mainly address COVID-19 related issues.
The special session comes in response to the Kentucky Supreme Court’s recent unanimous decision that rightly upheld laws, passed by the General Assembly earlier this year, that limited the Governor’s abusive use of emergency powers.
Throughout the pandemic, Gov. Beshear has acted unilaterally with numerous stringent and legally-questionable restrictions and mandates. Beshear’s actions have at times hampered the religious freedom rights of churches and individuals and the ability of parents and local schools to make decisions that are in the best interest of their children.
Among the concerning items included on the Governor’s call: extending the Governor’s emergency declaration through January 15, 2022 and a request for authority to issue another statewide mask mandate. Read the Governor’s full call here.
While we are thankful that the General Assembly is rightfully taking the lead in addressing these issues through legislation, instead of executive mandates, The Family Foundation team will be closely monitoring and engaging to ensure that Kentuckians’ religious freedoms and liberties are protected and that parents and families can make decisions in the best interest of their children.
As we stated in our Let Us Pray daily devotional, this morning – Lord grant our Kentucky lawmakers wisdom as they seek to balance individual liberty, religious beliefs, science, recommendations from health officials, and other considerations.
