FRANKFORT, KY – The Family Foundation applauds Sen. Steve Rawlings, the bill’s sponsor, and the Kentucky Senate for the passage of Senate Bill 60 by a vote of 29-7. The bill now moves to the Kentucky House.
SB 60 strengthens Kentucky’s existing Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) with much needed updates to provide adequate protections for religious liberty, including providing clearer definitions of protected speech and activities for use by the courts, and enabling individuals to recover appropriate damages after their First Amendment rights are unconstitutionally restricted.
Statement from David Walls, Executive Director of The Family Foundation:
“Religious freedom is our most foundational freedom and is deserving of the highest protection in the law. SB 60 provides much-needed updates to Kentucky’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act to ensure that every Kentuckian is free to simply live out their faith without government interference.
“We have seen a number of troubling instances over the last few years where the Governor and other Commonwealth officials have sought to restrict the free exercise of religion. SB 60 offers a stronger path of redress for those citizens who have had their rights infringed upon. We encourage the Kentucky House to move quickly on this important bill that will provide stronger protections for our first freedom,” Walls concluded.
