Let Us Pray

Let Us Pray: America Has a Gambling Problem

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” – Proverbs 13:11

The NFL Super Bowl has become a national spectacle where Americans, even those who do not necessarily follow the NFL, enjoy fellowship with friends and family, good food, and the biggest sporting event of the year. This year, the Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs in a resounding 40-22 victory.

The Super Bowl, however, has unfortunately revealed a troubling reality about our American culture. Simply put, America has a serious gambling problem. According to the American Gaming Association, it is believed that Americans gambled $1.39 billion on the Super Bowl alone, which is a significant uptick from last year.

Gamblers can use online platforms and various apps to literally place bets on virtually every aspect of the big game. Not only can one bet on the final outcome of the game, but gamblers can bet on the score at the end of each quarter, who will score the first touchdown, who will be the game’s MVP, who will win the coin toss, and more.

The big game’s commentators were literally describing the betting odds for the game as if gambling is now just an integrated part of the Super Bowl. The reality is that a majority of Americans who gambled their hard-earned money on the Super Bowl lost money. The problem associated with the enticement to gamble is that it only leads to one wasting money that they and their family need.

LET US PRAY…

Father, please open our nation’s eyes to Your wisdom so that they may see gambling as a waste of our resources that ultimately You have provided for us. Lord, empower Your people to be effective advocates who help others see the dangers associated with gambling. Father, may our nation truly see the addictive and harmful realities that gambling brings. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Every “Let Us Pray” devotional throughout this year’s legislative session will have the names of those in authority here in Kentucky so that we may fulfill our God-given command to pray for our governing leaders.
