Attacking the Heart of the Faith (January 6, 2022)

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality… And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” – 1 Cor. 6:9,11

In Canada and in the United Kingdom there are legitimate threats to religious liberty in the form of legislation focused on banning “conversion therapy.” This threat is now being seen even here in Kentucky with Rep. Lisa Willner (D) filing House Bill 12, the “Youth Mental Health Protection Act.”

This bill will “prohibit mental health professionals from engaging in sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts with a person under 18 years of age.” In other words, all licensed mental health care professionals will not be allowed to help a child change from the unwanted sexual desire for the same sex or help one change who is suffering from gender identity confusion.

The real abuse here is that persons under the age of eighteen will not be able to get help from licensed healthcare professionals who desire change and healing from serious issues like gender dysphoria and perverted sexual orientations as it will be illegal. This piece of legislation will place a muzzle on licensed healthcare professionals and only allow them to affirm LGBTQ+ lifestyles without any criticism of those lifestyles whatsoever.

The deeper theological issue pertaining to banning conversion therapy is that it is a direct attack on the heart of the Christian faith. The heartbeat of Biblical Christianity is that everyone is born a sinner and is in need of changed life. This changed life only comes from being washed in the precious and forgiving blood of Jesus Christ.

Christ calls us to forsake sin and to not live in it (1 John 3:9). Whether aware of it or not those who advocate for conversion therapy bans are attacking the heartbeat of the Christian faith as they diligently strive to keep LGBTQ+ individuals in sinful lifestyles that Scripture condemns and commands us to change from.

LET US PRAY . . .
Father, help us, to effectively deter the advancement of the dangerous Kentucky conversion therapy ban, House Bill 12, the “Youth Mental Health Protection Act.” Father, please protect the religious liberty of licensed mental health professionals in Kentucky and our nation so that they may always be able to speak Your truth to their patients. Lord, help those advancing this dangerous legislation to realize that real healing comes from You alone and that You do not save individuals to keep them in sin. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
