“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1
Joe Scarborough is the host of MSNBC’s morning show called “Morning Joe.” Recently, he raised the eyebrows of many Christians who were bewildered when he made an argument for abortion from the Bible.
Scarborough, on his show, astonishingly suggested that in the New Testament one can see that Jesus supported abortion by never addressing it. Scarborough stated, “Jesus never once talked about abortion, never once and it was happening back in ancient times, it was happening back in his time. Never once mentioned it and for people perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ down to one issue, it’s heresy.” Also talking about abortion Scarborough added, “Open the Bible, open the New Testament, read the red letters. You won’t see it there.”
To put it mildly, this is a grossly inaccurate theological argument that puts Scarborough’s Biblical illiteracy on full display for the nation to see. Scarborough’s interpretation of Scripture here is completely out of bounds in Biblical Christianity. Orthodox Christendom, from the early church all the way through to the present day, has always held that the Scriptures teach that human life is to be protected and defended.
From a Scriptural standpoint, Scarborough’s argument falls very quickly. The New Testament teaches that the occupant of the womb is fully a person (Luke 1:41). Furthermore, Jesus teaches clearly that murder is wrong (Mark 10:19). Therefore, in conclusion, Jesus does address the issue of abortion, and teaches that no person should be murdered even if that person is in the womb.
LET US PRAY…
Father, please enlighten Americans to understand that the Scriptures speak clearly against abortion which is the murder of innocent life. Lord, please convict and reveal to Joe Scarborough the seriousness of his error and false message. Father, empower all Kentuckians to take a stand for life and to vote “Yes for Life” on November 8th. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
