Let Us Pray: Independence Day

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:17

Today, Americans across our beautiful nation will gather with friends and family while enjoying great food, fellowship, and fireworks. Americans are celebrating today because it is the fourth of July, a revered American Holiday, Independence Day.

May we not get so caught up in the festivities of the day that we forget the sobering history surrounding this holiday. In 1776, 247 years ago, the new government of the United States signed the Declaration of Independence.

Thomas Jefferson brilliantly authored the majority of the Declaration of Independence where he explained the reasons why the United States was seeking liberty and independence from the British Empire. However, the document alone was not enough to provide freedom for our nation.

There was a high price that was paid for our freedom in the American Revolutionary War. The war lasted for a lengthy eight years and resulted in the death of 25,000 courageous American Patriots. Let us remember today, the men who fought so valiantly to ensure victory in the war and freedom for the United States.

As we celebrate Independence Day, may we never forget the enduring vision of our founding fathers and the patriots who sacrificed deeply for our freedom, so that we may… “hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Declaration of Independence)

Father, thank You for the incredible blessing of being an American where we can freely live our lives. Lord, thank You for those who were willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that the United States would be a free land. Father, we pray for Your continuous blessings on our nation for years to come. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
