Let Us Pray

Let Us Pray: Jesus Praised at the College Football National Championship Game

“And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’” – Mark 16:15

A week ago, the University of Notre Dame played against Ohio State University in the much-anticipated College Football Playoff National Championship game. The Buckeyes defeated the Fighting Irish to clinch the title game and became the first-ever championship team of the twelve-team playoff era.

For both of these teams, however, their incredible run of victories this season was not the only thing associated with them. All throughout the season, these two teams have been public about their faith in Christ, and it was no different for the championship game.

After the championship game as Will Howard, quarterback for Ohio State, accepted the Offensive Player of the Game Award, he said, “First and foremost, I got to give the glory and the praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Also, after the game at the press conference Riley Leonard, quarterback for Notre Dame, praised Jesus and said, “Us and Ohio State were the two teams who praised Jesus Christ the most, and I think we strengthened each other in our faith. … I’m happy to see Godly men come out on top no matter what the circumstance is. I’m happy to praise Jesus in the lowest of lows.”

Christ was praised so much during the championship game and throughout the season of these two teams that ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt and Race Davis discussed it in detail during their post-game analysis. There is a Biblical principle that is being played out here with these two teams specifically, and that is in every area of life we are to publicly praise Christ Jesus. Let us follow the example that was laid out before us during the national championship game and that is wherever the Lord puts us we are to be faithful to proclaim His goodness to our world.

LET US PRAY…

Father, we praise You for these young men on the football teams of Ohio State and Notre Dame who have used their platform to publicly praise You. Lord, empower Your people to publicly glorify You in whatever situation, circumstance, or atmosphere we find ourselves in. Father, strengthen us to be bold in proclaiming the Gospel to all of creation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Every “Let Us Pray” devotional throughout this year’s legislative session will have the names of those in authority here in Kentucky so that we may fulfill our God-given command to pray for our governing leaders.
