Let Us Pray: Kim Davis Appeals Federal Judge’s Ruling

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24

Kim Davis, a former county clerk in Kentucky, drew national attention in 2015 when she refused to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple on the basis of her religious beliefs. Due to her refusal to issue the marriage license to the same-sex couple, she was briefly jailed and was only released once her staff issued the marriage license on her behalf, although her name was not on the form.

The same-sex couple who was denied a marriage license from Davis sued her, and in 2023, a jury found that Davis should pay them $100,000 in damages. The same-sex couple then sought a payment from Davis for the fees and expenses for their attorneys.

Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge David L. Bunning ruled that Davis must pay the fees and costs because the same-sex couple prevailed in their lawsuit. The judge has ordered that Davis must pay a total of $260,104 in fees and expenses to attorneys who represented the same-sex couple.

Attorneys for Davis are appealing the judge’s ruling to try to reverse the order to pay more than $300,000 to the same-sex couple and also in hopes of this case reaching the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges. Mat Staver of the Liberty Counsel stated, “This case is ready for review by the United States Supreme Court, and Kim Davis and her case is a very good vehicle to take this matter up to the high court to not only advance religious freedom but to overrule this decision, as it has no basis in the Constitution.”

LET US PRAY…

Father, may this case be used to strengthen and fortify our First Amendment rights. Lord, empower our court system to rule righteously and correctly in the case. Father, please bless Kim Davis for her stand for righteousness and marriage. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
