Let Us Pray

Let Us Pray: KY Attorney General Coleman Says Ten Commandments Displays Are Constitutional

“Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord.” – Leviticus 22:31

Right now, in the Kentucky General Assembly, there are legislative measures, HJR 15 and HB 65, that are picking up steam which would allow for the public display of the Ten Commandments. HJR 15 would restore the Ten Commandments monument back to the KY Capitol grounds which were removed four decades ago.

HB 65 would require Kentucky schools to display the Ten Commandments and offer an explanation of their impact on American history in every Kentucky public school. With the public display of the Ten Commandments in Kentucky becoming a center of discussion, many have requested an opinion from the KY Attorney General Russell Coleman.

Days ago, Attorney General Coleman released an opinion that clearly argued that the public display of the Ten Commandments on Kentucky’s Capitol grounds and in public school classrooms is objectively constitutional regardless of previous court decisions. AG Coleman argued, “Judicial decisions striking down previous Kentucky statutes providing for the display of the Ten Commandments were firmly grounded on the now repudiated Establishment Clause test announced in Lemon v. Kurtzman.”

AG Coleman further argued that the Ten Commandments can be displayed on public property just as long as it is an effort to “acknowledge the historical significance of the text,” not primarily for religious reasons. The Kentucky legislature needs to pass the important legislative measures of HJR 15, HB 65, and HB 116 to publicly display the Ten Commandments as these have had an undeniable impact on making our nation and our legal system the best on earth.

LET US PRAY…

Father, please convict each and every Kentucky legislator to vote in favor of HJR 15, HB 65, and HB 116 to publicly display the Ten Commandments in Kentucky. Lord, may our Commonwealth not only publicly display the Ten Commandments but may we obey them as well, which will lead to a stronger, more flourishing state. Father, we praise You for this strong and influential opinion from Attorney General Coleman. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Every “Let Us Pray” devotional throughout this year’s legislative session will have the names of those in authority here in Kentucky so that we may fulfill our God-given command to pray for our governing leaders.
