“Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord.” – Leviticus 22:31
In 1971, the Fraternal Order of Eagles donated a six-foot granite monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments to the state Capitol in Kentucky where it was then displayed on the grounds. Years later, the Ten Commandments monument was placed in storage to make room for a construction project, and at that time the ACLU successfully sued to block the reinstallation of the monument in 2000.
Thankfully, twenty-five years later, in the current legislative session here in Kentucky, Rep. Shane Baker filed HJR 15 which would restore the Ten Commandments monument back to the KY Capitol grounds. This, however, is not the only push from the KY General Assembly to have the Ten Commandments publicly displayed.
Rep. Josh Calloway filed HB 65 which would require Kentucky schools to display the Ten Commandments and an explanation of their impact on American history in every Kentucky public school. This piece of legislation would restore the law the Supreme Court overturned in the 1980 decision of Stone v. Graham.
Furthermore, Rep. Richard White filed HB 116 which would add the Ten Commandments to the historical documents list that school boards may allow teachers to employ while teaching about American history. The Kentucky legislature needs to pass these important legislative measures as the Ten Commandments had an indisputable influence on American history and our legal system which has made our nation and state so strong and sturdy.
LET US PRAY…
Father, we thank You for the courage of Rep. Baker, Rep. Calloway, and Rep. White for filing these immensely important bills surrounding the Ten Commandments. Lord, please convict each and every Kentucky legislator to vote in favor of these bills. Father, may our Commonwealth publicly display and obey Your commands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Every “Let Us Pray” devotional throughout this year’s legislative session will have the names of those in authority here in Kentucky so that we may fulfill our God-given command to pray for our governing leaders.
