In May of this year, Montana became the first state in the nation to pass legislation that protects children from sexualized drag performances. The Montana state legislature passed House Bill 359, which specifically bans individuals dressed in drag from reading books to children at libraries and public schools.
Not long after Montana’s Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the bill, House Bill 359 was targeted by LGBTQ activists who filed a lawsuit against the law. Those taking aim at the law stated that somehow HB 359 violated their First, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
Unfortunately, in recent days, U.S. District Court Judge Brian Morris upheld a temporary restraining order on HB 359. Simply put, due to the Judge’s decision, the Montana law that the state legislature passed that protects children from sexualized drag performances has been momentarily blocked.
Judge Morris in his ruling indicated that Montana already has laws protecting children from obscene performances. He said, “No evidence before the Court indicates that minors face any harm from drag-related events or other speech and expression critical of gender norms.”
From a theological perspective, Judge Morris is completely wrong. The Biblical perspective reveals great harm posed to children when they are exposed to adults explicitly performing in ways that celebrate what the Scriptures call sexual immorality. All forms of sexual immorality ultimately lead to deterioration in life, only aligning one’s life in accordance with Biblical truth leads to the height of human flourishing.

Father, please protect children in Montana from sexualized drag performances as the law to ban them is going through the legal process. Lord, we praise You for the courage and conviction of the Montana legislature to protect children. Father, enlighten our culture to realize that only living in accordance with Your truth will lead to a flourishing life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
