Let Us Pray

Let Us Pray: No Retreat

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” – Ephesians 6:13

The Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker and three-time Super Bowl champion, Harrison Butker, is a great example for the nation of what it means to be bold for Christ and has shown no sign of retreat in the face of cultural pressure. In May, Butker delivered what came to be seen as a controversial commencement address at Benedictine College where he simply advocated for Biblical truth and its beauty.

The controversy was ignited because Butker dared to encourage the graduates to live out their Christian faith and to be strong in their public stance on human life, marriage, morality, and more. Butker has faced tremendous ridicule and unfair criticism for his public stand for Biblical truth, even experiencing the NFL distancing itself from him.

Recently, the Chiefs and Butker agreed to a four-year contract extension which will now make him the highest paid kicker in the league. However, at a press conference days ago, Butker was once again pressed and questioned about his speech at Benedictine College. Butker responded by saying, “I prayed about it, I thought about it, and I was very intentional with what I said … I stand by what I said.”

Butker’s response at the press conference was a tutorial for Christians everywhere in how our stand for Christ is to be one of no compromise, no backing down, and no retreat. In this current cultural climate where Biblical truth is viewed as controversial, Butker is portraying the strength and boldness we are called to exhibit publicly for our Lord.

LET US PRAY…

Father, please bless Harrison Butker for his uncompromising stance for Your truth. Lord, may Your people be bold and strong in standing for You in our culture that wrongly views Your truth as controversial. Father, may we use every ounce of influence that we have for Your honor and glory in our culture. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
