Poll Finds a Decline in American’s Belief in God

“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” – Psalm 14:1a

Gallup, a polling organization, has just released a new poll centered on Americans’ beliefs about spiritual entities. The poll found that the majority of Americans claim to believe in God, however, the study did show that the percentage of Americans who believe in God is edging downward.

Since 2016, there has been a three to five percent drop in Americans who claim to believe in God, and since 2001 there has been a 16% drop. At the beginning of the millennium, 90% of Americans professed belief in God. Now, in 2023, this new survey has found that Americans who believe in God have dropped to 74%. These findings are concerning as we think about the future direction of our nation because the more individuals who lack belief in God the more confused our culture grows.

It must be noted that if one does not believe in God then there is simply no objective standard for morality that enables one to conduct their life fruitfully. There is a link between the lack of belief in God, and the subjectivity of truth we are witnessing in our culture. If one believes there is no moral law given by God, then they themselves become the arbiter of truth and can decide subjectively what is right or wrong.

For example, without belief in God, and adherence to His Word, one can decide for themselves what gender they are, what constitutes a marriage, when human life begins, and more. This is a path that only brings about chaos and confusion, as we are witnessing at times in our nation.

However, when one truly believes in the God of the Bible, they then can align their life with His truth and find peace, fulfillment, serenity, and more. This is also true for our American society, the more that truly believe in God and align their life with His truth, the more our culture will flourish.

Let Us Pray…

Father, empower us to effectively evangelize our nation for You. Lord, may our culture one day be one that is characterized as one that honors Your Word. Father, may Americans at large realize that only chaos and confusion follow a nation that goes away from You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
