Pride and Identity (June 8, 2022)

“The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” – Proverbs 8:13

God’s Word strongly condemns pride and even warns that it precedes destruction. Ironically, the LGBTQ+ movement chose this word to promote their misguided agenda and many in the media and business world are joining them in celebrating June as “Pride Month”.

“Pride Month” is an outgrowth of intersectionality, an analytical tool introduced in American universities in the 1990s to challenge the idea that dominant and oppressive social groups are easily identifiable. It maintains that your identity is measured by how many victim statuses you can claim. Suffering in this divisive and destructive worldview includes both material AND perceived suffering. Indeed, the “dignitary harm” clause of the Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing “same-sex marriage,” expanded the concept of harm to include harm to one’s dignity and identity.

Unfortunately, intersectionality works against the gospel of Christ by fostering an unbiblical view of identity and producing never-ending social division and fragmentation. May we take real violence and oppression seriously while acknowledging that our biological human identity is an image bearing reflection of God.

LET US PRAY…
Our Father in heaven, thank you creating all humanity in your image and for providing our eternal identity as brothers and sisters in Christ. We confess that our own sin and the sin of others produces suffering. May we realize that truly oppressed people need both body and soul care that only comes through Your Son. Guide us to cultivate families and communities that reflect the fruit of Your Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
