SENATE MARCHES ON WITH CONFIRMATIONS
The U.S. Senate, under Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s leadership, confirmed 15 federal judicial nominees this month.
Since 2017, he has led the U.S. Senate to confirm 112 of President Trump’s judicial nominees.
The confirmation of two justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, to tilt its makeup in favor of conservatives by a 5-4 majority, is expected to have a significant impact for decades to come. It could also be critical to efforts by pro-life activists to overturn Roe v. Wade, the poorly reasoned decision legalizing abortion in the United States. As the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court often decides the most controversial and hotly contested legal issues.
Despite the Supreme Court receiving the lion’s share of attention, the confirmation of 41 judges to the Circuit Courts of Appeals is extremely noteworthy because those courts have the final say in an overwhelming majority of cases.
The 69 district court judges confirmed are also important because that is where the case’s record is built, potentially shaping the outcome of legal determinations at the higher levels.
Despite the Senate’s large degree of success, 67 of Trump’s nominees are currently pending for 138 vacancies.
